Back in 2011, a few smart people at Harvard found that a Wandering Mind Is an Unhappy Mind. Using smart phones to track participants thoughts feelings and actions, the study determined that "people spend 46.9 percent of their waking hours thinking about something other than what they’re doing, and this mind-wandering typically makes them unhappy."
The peace, calm and clarity found in the present moment often gets overshadowed by the mind volleying between past memories and conversations or future worries and fantasies. This disconnect from the present moment can cause stress, anxiety and robs us from the utter joy that can be found in the present.
Mindfulness practice train you to bring you mind back to the present moment and notice what is happening with our thoughts, feelings and sensations. We get familiar with our own thought patterns and begin to notice how they trigger responses in our bodies that can be harmful. The practice of mindfulness gives us the space to be in the present moment with acceptance and non-judgment. In these moments we can find inner peace, calm and clarity.
